Learning from history
When I see my dog picking up in our patterns I wonder why humans are so slow at doing the same. My historical fiction novel, Hurricane Hazel, One Family’s Story, tells us what happened when we built housing in the way of water… of unexpected natural disasters. The Ford government has given away land to…

The Holland Marsh
In 1954 Hurricane Hazel tore through Ontario, flooding the Holland Marsh and destroyed crops. In 2023, Ford’s government is going to run a highway through the Marsh, destroying crops, and creating a situation where runoff could destroy waterways. We couldn’t prevent a natural disaster but he can be stopped.

End of 2022, but not the end of Greenbelt concerns
As the year ends, we need to not turn our backs on efforts to preserve the Greenbelt. In winter, it is easy to forget the lush fields, green trees, and duck sounds of wetlands and fields. Let’s keep up the fight. There is no infrastructure for these new houses, nearby towns don’t want them, and…

Wetlands
The Ford government is planning on removing government oversight on the removal of wetlands from the Greenbelt and giving it over to private enterprise. This government is robbing the healthy future of Ontario’s wetlands, agricultural lands and its citizens. Read my book, Hurricane Hazel, One Family’s Story, a historical fiction that clearly outlines what happens…

Weather events
When we experience unusual and damaging weather events, we must connect them to our decisions about how we treat the environment we live in and that which surrounds us. Protest the potential Greenbelt loss or we will all live with the consequences.

Greenbelt protests
We can’t afford to let this go. Developers have more than 80,000 acres of land in Ontario that is undeveloped and not in the Greenbelt. Why are they being permitted to steal our agricultural land, our water sources, endanger wildlife. Once we let them do this, this wonderful resource will be gone forever.

The Bradford bypass
While this new Ontario highway has not been built yet, the government says they have already planned on expanding it. Bad development decisions, endangering animals, destroying trees and farmland have become standard for this government. They need to stop, do proper environmental assessments and understand lessons from the past.

Rewilding
More and more animals, such as coyotes, are being forced out of their natural habitat and are entering cities. Living in ravines and forested areas, they try to avoid us by coming out mostly at night. As Ford removes Greenbelt land, these animal-people encounters will become more frequent and these incidents are often detrimental to…

A Book You Should Read
I wrote “Hurricane Hazel, One Family’s Story”, to remind people what happens when developers are allowed to solve a housing crisis by building on floodplain. Once the Greenbelt is compromised by new housing, the problems will be experienced by the residents, not the government nor the builders. You can buy it at novelspot.ca
